There was a time when I would have said Elle Kennedy was one of my favorite romance authors. I’ve read and enjoyed so much from her but the Briar books do not work for me at all and I don’t see myself reading anymore from this series.
The Mistake tells the unlikely romance between rowdy college hockey player John Logan and freshman Grace Ivers—a perpetual good girl who gives the notorious playboy a run for his money.
Kennedy excels at developing characters who crash into each other and upend what they believe to be true about themselves. But, much like in The Chase, I just don’t buy these characters as having an HEA. By the end of the book Logan is in a completely different place than Grace in life and I don’t see them lasting long. She is just discovering herself while he is making some big “real world” decisions. At one point Grace accuses Logan of only being into her for his own ego and I couldn’t agree more.
What disappoints me the most about this series is the weak worldbuilding. I know absolutely nothing about Briar and it feels like all of the hockey boys share one personality. I could not tell you the difference between Dean or Tucker or Mike from this book…I also think there might be a Hunter?
